Counselling is a talking therapy that allows you to discuss your problems, thoughts and any difficult feelings you encounter in a safe and confidential environment with an experienced and qualified professional. It is a process people seek when they want to change something in their lives or to simply explore thought and feelings in more depth.

Under the counselling umbrella, there are many different approaches that can be adopted. A brief summary of the main approaches I use in my practice are:

Humanistic

Focuses on self-development, growth and responsibilities. It seeks to help individuals recognise their strengths in the present “here and now”. The aim of humanistic therapy is usually to help the client develop a stronger and healthier sense of self. It tends to not focus on past events. In this type of therapy, the client tends to lead the sessions without direction. It is believed that under the right conditions such as empathy, warmth and positive regard the client will work towards positive change.

Psychodynamic

Unlike Humanistic therapy Psychodynamic therapy focuses on past events and the impacts they may have on the present. It seeks to unravel the unconscious mind and make it conscious. It takes the view that our unconscious holds onto painful memories and feelings too difficult for the conscious to process. It looks at defence mechanisms the mind may have created to protect them from feeling difficult feelings which in turn may be doing more harm than good. It encourages the client to reflect upon their earliest memories and can seek to find links between the past and present.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

This therapy focuses on how your thoughts, beliefs and attitudes affect your feelings and behaviours and demonstrates how they are all linked. It seeks to discover negative thoughts and the effect they have on you. This therapy can offer coping solutions and train the mind how to rethink itself to try and develop a happier, healthier state of mind. CBT will seem to challenge negative and distorted thinking and will also break overwhelming problems down into smaller more manageable parts.
